WB: 22.5.17.
What a busy couple of weeks the children have had.
During our topic work the children have been using the iPad’s to find some interesting facts about the Queen, Queen Victoria and Neil Armstrong.
In RE, we began our new topic on ‘Being Sorry’. The children discussed how our behaviour and actions can affect others. This gave them the opportunity to talk about the right and wrong choices that they make and the consequences for their actions.
In Maths, we have been finding 1 more/1 less, 10 more/10 less than any given number on the 100 square. We have also been using addition and subtraction to solve the answers to number sentences.  We have also been looking for patterns in numbers on the 100 square.
The children have all been given their login details for ‘Times Table Rock Star’.  We have had a look at the website today and the children seem excited about choosing their very own rock star name and creating their avatar.  Over the half-term it might be good to have a look at this and ‘have a go’.
In light of recent events in Manchester a final decision will be made after the half-term regarding our forthcoming trip to the London Aquarium.

Enjoy the holidays!

WB: 8.5.17.
What a busy couple of weeks we have had in Year 1.
In English, the children have been continuing to work on a non-fiction text. They have been labelling diagrams, writing captions and working on writing opening sentences when completing a report.  Perhaps when you are sharing a non-fiction text with your child at home you could discuss how the writer of the book has used different layouts to present the information.
In Maths, the children began by measuring the length of objects using non-standard units (uni-fix cubes) and then progressed to using the vocabulary of centimetres when measuring with rulers. This week they have been using adding and subtracting a single-digit number from a 2-digit number.
In Science, the children have been identifying and classifying animals. They have been looking at birds, mammals, reptiles, fish and amphibians and discussing the differences between the groups.
In RE, we have been learning about what happened on Pentecost day and thinking about how the Holy Spirit helped Jesus’ friends. Next week we will begin our new topic on ‘Being Sorry’.
A big thank you for all the wonderful contributions we have had so far whilst learning about ‘Famous People’. The children have really enjoyed sharing their information with each other.
During Art and Design, the children have been learning about the famous artist, Vincent Van Gogh. Using pastels, they have created some amazing pictures.

Next week in English, the children will be introduced to a traditional tale from India.
In Maths, the children will continue to use addition and subtraction. They will also be finding 1 and 10 more/1 and 10 less than any number to 100.

Enjoy the weekend!
