WB: 4.12.17.
It was wonderful to see so many of you today at the Year 1 and Year 2 Nativity. The children were just amazing – I am sure you were so proud of them all. Over the past couple of weeks they have worked very hard to learn so many of the songs for ‘Behind the Stable Door’ but I am sure you will agree it was all worth it. They sang with enthusiasm and supported the Year 2 children wonderfully.

Thank you so much for your generosity today after the performance. The total amount collected was over £350 for the Hospice of St Francis in Berkhamsted which was just wonderful.
Next week is going to be another busy week.
On Wednesday, we will have the KS1 ‘Spelling Bee’. There is also the opportunity to ‘Bling Up’ your scooter for a competition.
On Thursday, it is Christmas dinner day. If your child has a Christmas hat then please send it in for them to wear.
On Friday, it is Christmas party afternoon. A special thanks to our class representatives who have already began organising the food and drinks for this occasion, it is very much appreciated.

2.12.17.
Cannot quite believe that December is upon us already and the Christmas preparations are well under way. Our new RE topic of ‘Waiting’ has enabled the children to think about how we can prepare ourselves during the season of Advent. The children have made their own little Advent wreath, bells to decorate the Christmas tree, an Adventcalendar and listened to the story of the Annunciation. The RE homework set for this week will support the children’s understanding about how Mary felt when she was told she was going to have a baby called Jesus.






In Maths, the children have been using mathematical language to describe the position of objects in a grid.
In English, the children have been working on the non-fiction book, ‘Who Lives Here?’ They have been creating diary pages which have included headings, pictures and captions.
In Science, the children have been learning about the season of winter and had much fun exploring objects frozen in the ice.
During Art and Design, the children have focussed on three kinds of lines to create their beautiful winter pictures; a thick line for the tree trunk, medium lines for the branches and thin lines for the twigs.


The children learnt a very valuable lesson on Wednesday when Mrs Moloney came in to speak with the children in assembly about road safety. The focus of the assembly was to Be Safe and Be Seen. The children learnt about the importance of looking, listening and holding on to an adults hand near busy roads. They were given different scenarios about road safety to think about and learnt a rhyme to reinforce this important message. 

The children have been working hard to learn the words of the songs for the performance of ‘Behind the Stable Door’. We look forward to seeing you on Friday at 10.00a.m.  Please remember to send in any slips for seats by Wednesday so that we are able to allocate any extra requests for seats.
If your child would like to take part in the Strictly X Factor show then the auditions will be taking place on Monday lunch time.

The ‘Noise Keepers’ drama production held on Tuesday was a great start to our Anti-Bullying week. The children enjoyed the performance and it helped us to remember that we are all unique and all equal.
In Maths, the children have been exploring positional language using the language of left, right, above, below, next to, in between… Next week, we will be using language to describe directions such as whole turn, half turn and three-quarters of a turn.  
In English, we began our non-fiction unit. We used the book, ‘Who Lives Here?’ which is a recount of four nature walks through the seasons. We discussed the features that we might find in a non-fiction text such as real information, photographs, captions, contents page, titles, page numbers, index and glossary.   
This week in Science, the children have been making rain gauges. They predicted how much rain would fall in a week and have placed the rain gauges around the school in different locations. Next week they will observe the rain fall and compare these to the predictions from this week.
In RE, the children have been learning about Judaism. We discussed some of the symbols of the Jewish faith such as the tallit, the kippah, the menorah candlestick and compared these to our own Christian faith. We also listened to the story of Abraham’s family and found out about God’s promise to him. The children used the 2Paint program to depict this story.
 
During Art and Design, the children have been mixing primary colours to make secondary colours and have created a colour wheel. Next week, the children will be adding black and white to their colour and explore different colour tones.
We began our new Geography topic this week by challenging the children to complete the sentence in three words: Geography is the study of… Afterwards, the children looked at a variety of pictures of people and places around the world and then had to sort them between human geography or physical geography.

WB: 30.10.17.
It was lovely to see the children back feeling refreshed after their half–term holidays.
In English, we started our Poetry unit which focused on our senses. The children began by using their own senses to describe how the wind moves things and the sounds it makes. They listened to a poem called, When the Wind Blows and worked together in small groups to recite a verse each. They had fun using instruments and objects to create sound effects and then perform to each other.




In Maths, the children have been learning about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. They have been able to sort shapes in a variety of ways using the vocabulary – flat, solid, faces, edges, vertices, straight sides and curved sides.  Next week, we will continue to explore the properties of shapes.



In RE, we used role-play to gain an understanding of the sacrament of Baptism and discussed the symbols used during a Baptism.

During PE, the children have been using the small apparatus. They have been thinking about different ways of travelling on the apparatus and moving safely with the correct technique.

WB: 16.10.17.
Cannot quite believe we have come to the first half-term already.
It was lovely to see so many parents at the consultations this week and catch up on how the children have settled into Year 1.
On Monday afternoon, Harpenden Building Society organised a ‘Money’ workshop for the children in Year 1 and 2.  They worked together to recognise coins and used addition to work out the total of money. They were also given an amount of coins and had to work out if their total was more, less or the same as a given amount. The children worked well together and enjoyed the challenge. 
What a wonderful experience the children had on Tuesday when we visited Windsor Castle.  They enjoyed a workshop called, ‘Knights Wanted, Apply Here’, which was held in the Moat Room.  Through role-play the children found out about some of the people who lived in the castle a long time ago, what life was like in a castle and the process of becoming a knight. Following the workshop the children visited the Queen Mary’s Dolls House, The State Apartments and St George’s Chapel before returning to the learning centre for lunch.










 









The children have had a very productive half-term. Mrs Serra and I were extremely proud of each and every child on Friday when they concluded the term with a fantastic assembly. The children shared their talents; spoke clearly, sang beautifully and acted out an important message of ‘belonging’.  We look forward to seeing more of their talents during the X Factor competition at the end of term!
I would like to say a big thank you for all your support this half-term and especially to those parents who volunteered and accompanied us on our trips, it is much appreciated.
