WB: 18.4.16.

This week in Year 1 we have continued to focus on a non-fiction text in English. The children have been finding information about animals and then composing sentences about what they have read.
During our Maths lessons the children have been using their number bonds up to 20 to solve addition and subtraction word problems. Children were encouraged to use Numicon, bead strings and unifix-cubes to support them when solving the problems.

In RE it was lovely to hear about all the different Holydays that the children had researched for homework. In small groups the children had fun using role-play to act out the various Holydays whilst the others guessed which Holyday was being ‘acted out’.

In Science the children enjoyed looking for and observing ‘living things’ in our school environment. They used the iPad’s to photograph their findings which supported discussion when they returned to the classroom.

Thank you very much for all the fruits that were sent into class this week. The children really enjoyed making and tasting their fruit salad. I think we were amazed at how many different countries the fruit had come from and how far it had actually travelled.

In Art the children have been looking at the work of the famous artist, Jackson Pollock.  Afterwards, children had the opportunity to use a variety of ‘wheels’ to explore the idea of free expression through art.

On Thursday to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s 90th birthday the children decorated bunting. This bunting will be used in June when as a whole school we will celebrate the Queen’s official birthday.
Next week in English we will be focussing our learning on a non-fiction text. In Maths we will be continuing to use addition and subtraction. In RE we will be finding out about the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

Have a lovely weekend!

WB: 11.4.16.

It was lovely to see the children back on Tuesday looking refreshed and well rested after their Easter holidays. Our new RE topic, Holidays and Holydays gave the children a wonderful opportunity to share their holiday experiences with each other.
In English this week we have been focussing on Non-Fiction texts. The children have been writing labels and captions and thinking about what is needed when writing a report.
In Maths the children have been counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and have been exploring early multiplication skills using the language of ‘groups of‘ and ’lots of’.
The children have also been finding a half, quarter and three quarters of shapes which the children have been asked to continue for homework.
In Science the children began the new topic and discussed what animals and humans need to stay alive.
This week we concluded our ‘Keeping Healthy’ topic and will begin our new topic of ‘On the Move’ next week. To support this topic a trip to the Royal Air Force Museum in Hendon has been booked for Tuesday 10th May. A letter regarding this trip will be sent out next week.

Enjoy the weekend!
