Welcome to the 2015/2016 Year 1 blog!
The
children have settled well into Year 1 well and have shown an enthusiastic
approach to their new curriculum. It is a pleasure to see them come into school
independently and begin their ‘early morning’ work with confidence.
In English the children have been listening to a variety of
stories and composing sentences orally before writing them. We are also
focussing on what makes a good sentence and reminding the children to use
capital letters, full stops and finger spaces in their work.
At the present moment we are in the process of assessing the
children’s reading level. We thank you for your patience in this matter and aim
to have the reading books changed by the end of next week.
In Maths the children have been counting and adding one
more to a number. We have also been exploring addition of numbers to make 5, 10
and 20. We have used a range of resources to support this including Numicon,
bead strings and uni-fix cubes.
In RE we began by thinking about our Mission Statement and what it means to belong to the Saint Dominic community. Through our ‘Families’ topic the children have been learning about how God loves and takes care of everyone and have responded to this by creating some beautiful prayers.
Through
our ‘Seasonal Changes’ topic in Science the children have been discussing how
the weather changes through our seasons. They have been busy recording the
weather and had lots of fun on Friday making sun dials.
In Design and Technology the children have been learning skills that
will help them when they begin to make their own castles. A big thank you to
those parents who have sent in boxes, cylinders etc… which will be used to make
our castles. If you do have any extra boxes or containers at home then we would
be grateful of them.
For homework this week the children have a ‘Mathletics’ task to
complete. Each child has been given a user name and password to access the website.
If you have any problems accessing the program then please let us know.
The
children are very much looking forward to their school trip next week and
homework has been set to support this trip. You may like to have a look at the
Windsor Castle website with your child at the weekend as the website provides
lots of interesting information about the castle.
The
children have also voted for class Eco–Representatives
and School Council members. The children that were elected are:
Eco representatives - Luke and Madeleine
School Council members – James and Ruby
Have
a lovely weekend!
